What is the difference between natural and synthetic carpet fibers?

One of the most frequent questions we hear in our carpet store is whether one is better than the other, and our answer is always a resounding "no!" Whether you choose a natural or synthetic will ultimately come down to your budget and how much you value specific characteristics.

About wool

This fiber is entirely natural, being harvested from animal fur. It's soft, luxurious, durable, fire retardant, and pricey, although some mills are combining it with acrylics to bring down the cost. Don't worry about wool's all-white color; there are natural oils with tiny scales that flick off dirt; it is somewhat absorbent, however, so spills should be wiped right away.

Wool makes up a small percentage of residential broadlooms because others like jute, sisal, coir, etc., are more appropriate for smaller surfaces such as area rugs and mats.

Four common synthetics

Synthetics make up almost 97% of all carpet flooring, and many, especially those with large, active families with kids and pets, view them as the more practical choice. While there are acrylics and blends, there are four most often chosen.

1. Nylon: This is super strong, stain-resistant, and has excellent resiliency. This is an ideal rug for large, active families!

2. Polyester is fast becoming the "It" carpet because it is very moderately priced and has superior stain resistance due to its hydrophobic (non-absorbent) capabilities.

3. Olefin (polypropylene) is budget-friendly, durable, and often associated with looped constructions, such as Berber style.

4. Triexta: A relative newcomer to the market, this is already gaining a widespread reputation for strength and superior stain resistance built into the fiber.
